Michael Coats

Reentry Specialist

As a reentry specialist, Michael uses his personal experiences to help each client make the most of their second chance. He frequently reminds them to continue learning every day.

“There are many adjustments,” he said, “but you have to meet each challenge head-on.”

Michael was incarcerated for nearly 35 years. During his incarceration, he earned his bachelor’s degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and served as a pastor in one of the biggest churches at Louisiana State Penitentiary. After his release in March 2023, he was reunited with his wife of 40 years. He credits her with carrying him through his incarceration and reentry.

“She’s a strong woman,” he said, “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her.”

Before his incarceration, Michael pursued various endeavors. In addition to playing trumpet in LSU’s Golden Band from Tigerland, Michael owned and operated three Baton Rouge restaurants. Michael is thankful for the opportunity to live life beyond the gates of prison. He is committed to living a positive life and encourages each client to do the same.
